Diving Rebels Dive Club trip to
San Solomon Springs was held over Memorial Day weekend in May 2003. I went
up a few days early as I had never been to this part of Texas. The state
park is located about 150 miles east of El Paso just off of Interstate 10. I arrived on
Wednesday afternoon and set up camp. On Thursday, went to Ft Davis which
was 30 miles away thru the Davis Mountains and on Thursday night, drove to Marfa
to see the famed Marfa Lights.
Friday nights adventure was back thru the Davis Mountains to the McDonald
Observatory to a Star Party. There was a thunderstorm off to the south
but it stayed away long enough to view Jupiter and two of her moons and a couple
of star clusters thru telescopes. I wanted to see Saturn, but the storm
clouds covered the view before I had a chance.
The Rebels arrived with a fury around 6:30am on Saturday Morning
after driving all night from DFW. Steve Herman broke out his cooker and
began to cook breakfast for the group of 17 hungry travelers.
After breakfast, and finally waking up, the members set up
tents, but couldn't wait to hit the water in San Solomon Springs. The
water there is a constant 74 degrees. The first order of business was to
conduct the Underwater Checker Tournament:
The rest of Saturday and Sunday was spent diving in San Solomon
Springs and enjoying the perfect weather in West Texas. I made a total of
five dives including one night dive. A reminder, this is an altitude dive,
the altitude here is above 3000'. Here are a few of the underwater pics
taken. All the underwater pics were taken with a Fuji Disposable
Underwater Camera. I've taken this type camera to a depth of 30' and it's
taken some pretty good pics.
